The Fine Print
THE FINE PRINT for participating in the Wheel of Time fan cast and community
By submitting your picture and minimal personal information for use in the WoT Fan Cast (WFC), even if you are not immediately matched with a character, you are granting permission to use these things on the WFC page and in promotion of the WFC page in its existing and future formats. Promotion may include banner ads, LiveJournal user icons, IM buddy icons, and more. You do not have to disclose your real name when submitting your information; a web alias is an acceptable substitute.
By submitting your picture, you are agreeing to allow photo manipulation (including but not limited to changing hair and eye color to better fit a character match) unless expressly saying, “Do not Photoshop my picture” at the time you submit your picture. Webmistress will respect these wishes, though this may narrow the selection of characters for which you would be a good match. All photos may be subject to resizing, cropping, and minor quality adjustments such as bright/contract and color balance that do not alter your appearance any more than various lighting and camera settings would. The absolute minimum photo size that can be submitted is 150×200, but such a small photo must be of decent quality. Larger photos are preferred, with each dimension at least 500 pixels or greater. Clear digital photos are preferred over grainy webcam pictures.
The character matching process is nothing personal. The nature of many internet communities is that younger people tend to be more active. In the WoT community specifically, many “older” fans have been reading the series of 20 years and have tired of the fan scene because they just want to read about the Last Battle and be done with it. There are many “older” characters in the books that may end up being matched with younger real-life people. Aes Sedai pose the particular problem of appearing ageless even though they may have completely white hair. A 20-year-old could end up being matched with Cadsuane if she had a convincing picture with a stern expression on her face and a bun in her hair. Another 20-year-old could be matched with another non-channeling character on the basis that, were we in a real movie, makeup artists can do amazing things to age a person. Robert Jordan’s world also produces combinations of physical features we don’t generally see in our world; Sheriam is a good example, with her Asian-like tilted eyes paired with green eyes and red hair. The WFC tries to match people as closely as possibly, realizing that you may have to close your eyes and picture a person 20 years older or with a prosthetic nose or an eye missing. Please do not be offended by a suggestion of a character which may take a little imagination or movie magic to make it work. The “Photoshop” issue would not be brought up unless you request it one of these cases. Eye and hair color are easily done, but adding crows feet, forehead wrinkles, or removing body parts believably are far more arduous tasks probably better left to a person’s imagination.
Continuing in the “don’t take it personally” department, characters are matched to photos that bear a physical resemblance to the physical description written by Robert Jordan. Poses and facial expressions can come into play here, but you are not matched to characters as any sort of commentary on you as a person. If a suggested character match happens to be a Darkfriend, no one is suggesting that you are evil. Evil characters rarely “look” evil anyway. A character suggestion is no comment on your personal sexual behavior, morality, or anything else. Like an actor in a film, you have physical features to represent a character that could do great or terrible things. You may not like the character you are matched with. But do remember that actors generally claim to have more fun playing bad guys than good guys.
After being matched with a character, you may be switched once a better match is found a) because a new member more closely matches the character you were representing, b) because a character was found that better fits your picture, or c) both. Please do not take offense. There are over 1000 characters in the Wheel of Time series, and it may take some time before anyone stumbles across the description of the character that matches you perfectly.
Webmistress has final say in all character matches. Discussion is often very helpful when finding the right match, but if the webmistress does not agree with the majority of community members, the webmistress can choose to go her own way and make a different match. The webmistress may change her mind at any time. You may politely voice your disagreement with the webmistress’s decisions, but rudeness will be greeted with a request to play nice or discontinue use of the site. Continued displays of rudeness following a gentle reminder from the webmaster may result in banning from the community and/or removal from the WFC webpage at the webmistress’s discretion. No one needs extra drama in their lives.
