Unofficial Inn of the Green Ajah, for fans of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time

Brandon Sanderson on The Shadow Rising

February 29th, 2008 Christina

I think what I like most about what Brandon Sanderson has to say about The Shadow Rising is how he likes parts that other people don’t tend to like. He doesn’t even mention why it’s my favorite book, the breaking of the White Tower.

No, one of the things he liked about it resonates with me as well. When it comes to Perrin and Faile, I am a big fan. I agree with him about Faile being misunderstood. I mean, in a way, I sort of am Faile in many ways. Too many people loathe her. But she is my absolute favorite female character of the series. (Mat is my favorite male character.) If WoT’s new writer also likes Faile, I think that bodes well for how she is treated in A Memory of Light!

Fantastic Cross-Over Fanfic: The X-Files and The Handmaid’s Tale

February 27th, 2008 Christina

Back in college, I remember one of my roommates showing me a fantastic fanfic that featured Mulder and Scully from The X-Files in the world of Margaret Atwood’s excellent dystopic novel, The Handmaid’s Tale. A woman going by the name lilprincess8584 on eBay pointed me in the right direction to find it again.

The author, Amy Vincent, gives permission to freely distribute the story in its original form, so long as she is credited. So here I am, crediting her. And here is the story! Note: This was originally posted in an old school newsgroup, so the formatting may be a little funky. Some of the punctuation used to designate italics ended up breaking my code, so I did have to “translate” it. Also, this story features adult themes and one f-bomb.

This story is a crossover between the X-Files and the world created by Margaret Atwood in her novel “The Handmaid’s Tale.” It takes place perhaps six years in the future. While it should be understandable to those who haven’t read the book, I recommend reading “The Handmaid’s Tale” on its own merits — it’s a convincing portrait of a nation more ruthless, more controlling, than Mulder’s worst nightmares. It’s also a highly political vision of the future — I hope I have stayed true to Ms. Atwood’s vision, particularly since I am using her world without her permission, just as I’m using Mulder, Scully and Skinner without the permission of Chris Carter or Ten-Thirteen Productions. I authorize full distribution of this story as long as it remains in its original form and I am credited as the author. Comments of any kind are very much appreciated; send praise or flames to XFScully@aol.com.

Brandon Sanderson on The Dragon Reborn

February 25th, 2008 Christina

The Dragon Reborn happens to be the book I’m currently re-reading now. Brandon Sanderson muses in his blog about how this is the book where we really are meant to realize that the Wheel of Time series is not all about Rand.

Brandon Sanderson on The Great Hunt

February 20th, 2008 Christina

I just now caught up with Brandon Sanderson’s blog. For those of you who might not recognize his name, he’s the man who will be finishing A Memory of Light for us. He’s re-reading the whole Wheel of Time series in preparation for writing, and he’s jotting down some of his thoughts in his blog as he reads each book.

One thing I can agree with him on is how the shifting viewpoints of the narrative add to the overall experience.

Write about The Wheel of Time on The Wild Eggplant right now!

January 24th, 2008 Christina

I’m going to try something different. Anyone who registers with the site, which you have to do to leave a comment, will be an Author. This means you can post to the site! I think this will be a better way for people to submit their photos.

I’m going to do this on a trial basis. If I find that spammers and other creatures of the Dark One are abusing the privilege, I will change the default role to Contributor. As a Contributor, people can still compose posts, but they won’t appear on the site until I approve them. This is another decent option.

When you post to the site, please limit your discussion to mostly Wheel of Time related topics, or occasionally other fantasy literature. Only Randland-style cursing is allowed. I will edit for grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. I may delete things that are inappropriate, like spam or off-topic stuff, but hopefully that will be a rare occurence.

Is Compulsion really that bad?

January 11th, 2008 Christina

Aes Sedai seem to think that Compulsion is dirty, if not evil. Sure, it could be used for bad purposes, but it would certainly make things easier sometimes. Good intentions would be the key.

The Jedi use their mind trick on anyone weak-minded when it suits their purposes. Qui-Gon tried to compel Watto to accept his Republican Credits for the part he needed. Obi-Wan used it to tell the death stick pusher to go home and rethink his life.

I’m sure the Aes Sedai would’ve frowned upon at least Qui-Gon’s use of the Jedi Mind Trick, and possibly Obi-Wan’s, as well. But I tend to side with the Jedi on this one.

What do you think? Comment to join the discussion!

Two new ladies added to the WoT Fan Cast

December 29th, 2007 Christina

I have been a bad webmistress. I had two lovely young ladies waiting to be added to the WoT Fan Cast page, but I didn’t update it for entirely too long. That has been remedied. Take a look and let me know if you have any suggestions for Brenna and Jennifer!

Karistina Sedai lives!

December 16th, 2007 Christina

I have created an image of my role-playing character, Karistina Sedai, using FaceMaker as found on FoxRichards’ deviantART page.

Karistina Sedai of the Green Ajah

Notice the bold Saldaean nose and the hooded green cloak. I’m going to play around with the Facemaker program to see if I can illustrate some of my fan fiction.

Brandon Sanderson will complete A Memory of Light

December 14th, 2007 Christina

Tor announced that Brandon Sanderson will complete Robert Jordan’s final book in the Wheel of Time series, A Memory of Light.

Robert Jordan’s wife, Harriet, chose Sanderson to complete the novel, and she will edit it as she has edited all previous books in the series.

I am unfamiliar with Brandon Sanderson’s work, but I will be taking a look at Dragonmount’s interview with him to see what I can learn.

A Memory of Light is slated to be completed by the end of 2008 and published in Fall 2009.

The Wild Eggplant is looking for bloggers

December 9th, 2007 Christina

Do you love the Wheel of Time as much as I do? I need a few people who would like to post from time to time about WoT, since I don’t write as much as I’d like to anymore. If you’re interested, just leave me a comment on this post. In order to comment, you need to register for a site account. I can change your account status to Contributor, which will let you write posts.

There’s no pay involved. I’m not making any money here. But you can link to your own web page or Myspace profile or something when you sign each post. You hold the copyright on your posts, but you grant me the right to display them here on the site. I may edit some posts for silly things like grammar, spelling, and punctuation because I’m an editor at heart. I won’t edit for content unless something is wildly inappropriate, in which case I’ll email you about it. Please keep any cursing in the Randland style. Blood and bloody ashes or burn me are fine - even Mother’s milk in a cup! - but no f-bombs or other modern expletives.

What would you post about? Comment on the existing fan cast, pose some WoT theories, discuss any WoT-related news, write a memorial for Robert Jordan, or even post your fanfic. Please keep all fanfic PG-13. Some sexual situations are fine, as long as they aren’t explicit. Occasional non-WoT fantasy posts are alright. I’ve written about Harry Potter and such in the past. But only fantasy-related topics, and only if you can also post about WoT occasionally.

Sound good? I’d be glad to have you aboard!
